About.
Let Justice Rise, is a blog created by youth political activist and writer, myself, Liam Massey. I’ve always enjoyed writing ever since I was in elementary school and I’ve always felt a fire in the deepest part of my being when it comes to social issues and have searched for how to combine my outlook on these issues with my faith.
I come from a mixed race background, with my family coming from various places in the North American region. The part of my family that has influenced my outlook on the socio-political state of this country the most comes from my father’s side, those of African American descent whose story started in the segregated South. My grandfather hails from a small town called Lancaster, South Carolina and grew up in a shack with a dirt floor. He wanted to make a way for himself and escape the cycle of racism as well as poverty that was all he ever knew so he joined the U.S. Air Force, served overseas in Vietnam and was part of the large mid-twentieth century migration from the South to the North, where he was stationed for the rest of his military career in Plattsburgh, New York. His outlook as a man who didn’t have rights at home as a product of Jim Crow, fought in a war based on colonial ideals, and lived through the civil rights movement have bled right on down to me, and I try to live every aspect of my life fighting for his dream of an equitable and just future for his family.
My family throughout the genarations as well, has become an emblem of what it can look for people to come together across ethnic, cultural, and religious barriers in the name of faith and love. In the days where being an interracial couple was highly frowned upon and even dangerous, my French Canadian and Catholic grandfather on my mother’s side, when wanting to marry my English, Protestant, African Canadian grandmother went to the doorsteps of his childhood home, hand-in-hand with her, having newly taught himself to speak in English by reading so that he could date and eventually marry her, told his family, “I’m going to marry this woman, and if you don’t welcome her, this will be the last time that you will see me.” That, right there, are my roots. A family who, genarationally have never been afraid to leave everything they knew, stand up to the status-quo, and boldly as well as authoratitively, walk with heads held high in the face of racism, violence, and marginalization.
This blog is a place where I’ll be covering any news or events that occur regarding any issue of injustice within our country and its government with a unique intersection between activism and a Biblical point of view, because faith in our Lord and Savior is what has carried us through to this point in my family. I want to process through words my thoughts and feelings on these issues, to show people that there’s someone out there who cares, and that no matter your age, you have a voice and can make a difference. Let’s continue to let justice rise.
